A Step-by-Step Guide to Ensuring a Consistent Water Supply on Your Travels
If your water pump in your caravan is pulsing or experiencing intermittent operation, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps to help you diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Check Water Supply: Ensure that your caravan has a consistent and sufficient water supply. A fluctuating water source can cause the pump to pulse. its recommend not to have the tanks go lower than 25% if possible. If tanks runs empty air will enter the line and need to be purged out.
2. Check for Air in the System: Purge the water lines by running all taps and showers inside and outside the van. Sometimes the tap under the toolbox can be the culprit. Make sure to also test hot water (hot water does not need to be turned on).
3. Check Water Filter: Your caravan has a water filter and a small mesh filter on the water pump. Inspect both for clogs or dirt. A clogged filter can restrict water flow and cause pulsation. it is highly recommended to replace the water filter every 6-12 months depending on caravan usage.
4. Check for Leaks: Checking for leaks involves inspecting underneath your caravan to see if any leaks are coming from your plumbing. The next step is to inspect inside the caravan. There will be access panels located in the cabinets. Unscrew these and inspect the plumbing within the van."
5. Clean out solenoids: (for vans with electric switches for the tanks)
In the ensuite cupboard, remove the access panel, there will be 4 screws holding it in place. On the back side of this wall panel will be the solenoids. You will see 2-3 solenoids. Pull the cap off each solenoid by removing the 3 screws and carefully remove the little metal bar and spring...be careful not to drop the little metal bar and spring inside. Remove the flat disc and clean out any black plastic swarf from inside the solenoid. Replace the disc, replace the metal tube and spring (making sure the black side is facing the disc), and replace the cap and secure with the 3 screws.
6. Adjusting the Pump: On the top of your pump, there will be two grub screws. Adjust the one closest to you and higher up using a 2mm Allen key. Start with the Allen key pointing to you, then turn your tap on for a few seconds, and turn it off. Adjust the Allen key left or right until you are satisfied. The pump should turn off within 2-5 seconds and then pulse every 30-60 minutes to keep pressure up.
Professional Assistance: If you've tried the above steps and still can't resolve the issue, or if you're not comfortable performing the checks yourself, consider consulting a professional RV or caravan technician for a thorough inspection and repair.
