Understanding Stage 3 Airbags: Tips for Camping Level and Travel Height

A Guide to Properly Adjusting and Maintaining Your Airbag System

Stage 3 Airbags are a popular upgrade for caravans and RVs, providing improved stability, handling, and ride quality. However, to fully enjoy the benefits of this technology, it is essential to properly adjust and maintain your airbag system. In this article, we will discuss two important aspects of using Stage 3 Airbags - Camping Level and Travel Height - and provide some tips and guidelines to ensure that you are using your airbag system safely and effectively.

Camping Level

When camping, it is crucial to have your caravan or RV level to ensure maximum comfort and safety. Here are some steps to adjust your airbag system for camping level:

  1. Lower the airbags until your van is on bump stops.

  2. Raise or lower the nose of the van to have it close to level front to back.

  3. Raise whichever side of the caravan is low using the up control on the Cruisemaster panel.

  4. Once you are happy with the level, shut off the compressor and put your stabilizer legs down.

Note that if the compressor has been off for some time, it will need a few minutes to fill the air tank before you can pump the airbags up.

Travel Height

The correct travel height is critical for safe and efficient travel with your caravan or RV. Here are some guidelines to follow when measuring your travel height:

  1. Measure the distance from the top of the bump stop to the bottom of the chassis rails.

  2. Refer to your Cruisemaster identification plate fixed to the drawbar to determine the correct travel height for your axle load capacity.

  • 2800kg Capacity = 65mm
  • 3700kg Capacity = 75mm
  • 4400kg Capacity = 85mm

Note that your airbag pressure will likely be different from side to side when setting this up, and that is normal.

Maintaining Proper Airbag Pressure

The normal operating PSI range for tandem axle caravans is 45-60, and up to 80 max for single axle. It is crucial to keep your airbag pressure within this range to avoid overloading and damaging your caravan. Always refer to your manufacturer's manual for specific PSI settings for your airbag system. Anything more than this can show overloading in your caravan or incorrect travel height.

Properly adjusting and maintaining your Stage 3 Airbags is essential for a safe and comfortable travel experience. Follow the guidelines and tips provided in this article to ensure that your airbag system is functioning correctly, whether you are camping or traveling. Remember, always refer to your manufacturer's manual or seek professional advice for specific instructions on how to adjust and maintain your airbag system.
