Tips for Maintaining Your Off-Road Caravan's Water Pump and Filters

Your Off-Road Caravan is built to handle the toughest terrain while keeping you comfortable and safe. The plumbing system is an integral part of this experience, providing you with fresh water on demand. In this article, we will cover the plumbing layout and maintenance procedures that will help you keep your caravan in top condition.

Service Area:

The service area in your Off-Road Caravan is located behind the inspection panel next to the toilet. This is where you will find the water pump, water filters, and other plumbing components. To access the service area, simply remove the inspection panel by unscrewing the fasteners.

Water Pump:

The water pump is responsible for pressurizing the water system and delivering water to the various outlets in the caravan. Before turning on the water pump, make sure you have selected which tank you want to draw water from at the pump panel. This will prevent the water pump from running dry and potentially causing damage.

Water Pump Maintenance It is essential to regularly clean the water pump filter to ensure optimal performance. Check the filter for any obstructions and clean it as necessary.

Water Pump Filter Maintenance Steps 

Note: Before you start, ensure that you turn off the water pump and disconnect the power supply to the pump to prevent any accidents.

  1. Locate the Water Pump: The water pump is located near your caravan's water tank valves. It might be under a bench, in a storage compartment, or another accessible area. Consult your caravan's manual if you're unsure about the pump's location.

  2. Access the Filter: water pumps have an easily accessible filter that you can remove without much trouble. 

  3. Remove the Filter: Carefully remove the filter from its housing by grabbing the filter housing and turning it anticlockwise this will release the filter cartridge and allow you access to the filter inside be sure not to loose the rubber seal as this is very important. 

  4. Inspect the Filter: Examine the filter for debris, dirt, or sediment buildup. If the filter is excessively dirty, clogged, or damaged, it might be best to replace it with a new one. Otherwise, proceed with cleaning.

  5. Clean the Filter: a. Rinse: Rinse the filter under running water to remove loose debris and dirt. b. Soak (Optional): If the filter has stubborn buildup, you can soak it in a solution of water and vinegar. Mix equal parts water and vinegar and let the filter soak for about 15-30 minutes. This can help dissolve mineral deposits and sanitize the filter. c. Brush: Use a soft brush or an old toothbrush to gently scrub the filter to remove any remaining dirt or debris. Be careful not to damage the filter.

  6. Rinse and Dry: Thoroughly rinse the filter under clean water to remove any vinegar residue or remaining debris. Shake off excess water and allow the filter to air dry completely.

  7. Reassemble: Once the filter is completely dry, place it back into its housing or slot. Make sure it's properly seated the rubber O ring seal in seated and secured.

  8. Reconnect Power and Water: Reconnect the power supply to the water pump and turn on the pump. Check for any leaks around the filter housing.

  9. Test the System: Turn on all the taps, shower, external taps in your caravan to ensure that water flows smoothly with no air in the system and there are no issues with the water pump's performance.

  10. Regular Maintenance: To prevent future clogs and buildup, consider cleaning the water pump filter on a regular basis, especially if you notice a decrease in water flow or pressure.

Inline Water Filters:

Your Off-Road Caravan comes equipped with a standard water filter mounted behind the inspection panel next to the toilet. If you have a rear lounge model, the filter may be located under the center seat. If you have a dedicated drinking water tank, another filter will be located under the kitchen sink.

The standard water filter is fitted after the tank fill as the water is being drawn from the tanks into the caravan. This will filter the water used in your caravan. The Aquapro AIC-K filter will require replacement after approximately 12 months and can be purchased from Zone RV or www.mywaterfilter.com.au.

If you find that your caravan water pressure has depleted, remove your water filter and back flush to remove any debris.

  1. Gather Materials and Tools:

    • New Aquapro AIC-K filter cartridge
    • Wrench or filter housing removal tool (if provided)
    • Towel or rag
    • Bucket or container (to catch any water that may drip out)
    • Teflon tape (optional)
  2. Locate the Filter Housing: The Aquapro AIC-K filter system is typically installed under the sink or in a storage compartment. Locate the filter housing where the old filter cartridge is installed.

  3. Prepare for Replacement: Lay down a towel or rag to catch any water that may spill during the process.

  4. Remove the Old Filter Cartridge: Use the wrench or filter housing removal tool to unscrew the filter housing while holding the sides with a 15mm spanner. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Slowly pull the housing away from the filter head. Some water may still be trapped, so be prepared to catch any spills in the bucket.

  5. Dispose of the Old Cartridge: Carefully remove the old filter cartridge from the housing and dispose of it properly.

  6. Prepare the New Cartridge: If the new Aquapro AIC-K filter cartridge includes any packaging or protective covers, remove them. Ensure that any gaskets or seals are properly seated.

  7. Install the New Cartridge: Insert the new filter cartridge into the filter housing. Make sure it fits snugly and securely.

  8. Reattach the Filter Housing: Hold the housing against the filter head and turn it clockwise to tighten it. Use the wrench or filter housing removal tool to ensure it's snug but not over-tightened.

  9. Turn On the Water Supply: Turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks around the filter housing. If you notice any leaks, try tightening the housing a little more. If leaks persist, you may need to replace gaskets or seals.

  10. Purge Air and Check for Leaks: Connect your mains water to your caravan, Open all faucet, Showers, External Taps to allow water to flow through the system and purge any air that may have entered during the filter replacement. Check again for any leaks and ensure that water flows smoothly.

  11. Final Check: Make sure everything is secure and there are no leaks. Clean up any spills and discard the old filter cartridge properly.

Optional: If provided, you can use Teflon tape on the threads of the filter housing to create a better seal and prevent leaks.
